Papercutting and Papercraft

Victoria is a talented papercut artist and having joined as a member of the Guild in 2019, she was recently elected to hold the Executive role as Guild Secretary and jointly as Communications Officer. She is emerging as a professional artist and artisan crafter with her extraordinary layered papercut artworks and precision hand-cut designs. Working from her home studio near Norwich, she creates intricate pieces entirely by hand—each cut made using a surgical-grade scalpel and crafted with patience, precision, and a deep respect for this traditional process. Having originally trained for a career in Nursing at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, Victoria had triplet daughters in 2015 and subsequently left her profession, instead turning her papercutting hobby in to a career to flex around her family commitments.

Victoria now applies a somewhat modern twist to this ancient oriental craft, as every layered papercut begins with a carefully chosen photograph, digitally enhanced to perfect balance, lighting, and contrast to provide optimum clarity of detail with stunning effect. Once optimised, the image is separated into multiple design templates, which guide her through the complex hand-cutting process. Specialist papers are selected for their colour, texture, and ability to convey depth and realism, with each template applied and meticulously cut by hand.

Artistic judgement plays a vital role throughout, with adjustments often made mid-process to ensure the final artwork captures the raw essence of the subject. Typically made up of around eight individually cut and mounted layers—though some pieces use more or fewer depending on the level of detail—works can take up to forty hours each. The result is a strikingly detailed, dimensional piece that showcases the natural beauty of the subject with breathtaking clarity.

In addition to her mounted and framed originals, Victoria also creates smaller handmade items such as papercuts mounted in acrylic suncatcher discs, as well as a curated collection of limited-edition fine art giclee prints, greeting cards, and gift items featuring her designs. Her work blends traditional craft with modern technique, resulting in art that is as technically impressive as it is emotionally resonant—a celebration of nature, patience, and the quiet art of precision.
