Woodworking
Dennis Honour has recently joined the Norfolk Craft Guild and has spent a lifetime of woodworking, combining traditional craftsmanship with creativity and a sharp eye for detail. His journey began straight from school, working in a cabinet maker’s workshop where an early appreciation for fine woodworking first took root. After moving from London to Thetford, Norfolk, in his twenties, woodworking became a passionate hobby alongside everyday life. Over the years, Dennis created everything from garden sheds for friends and family to handcrafted bird boxes, feeders, bird tables, toys, and hedgehog houses – practical pieces designed to be both useful and beautifully made.
As demand for his work grew, Dennis began exhibiting at craft fairs and local markets. However, transporting larger wooden pieces eventually became increasingly difficult, prompting a natural evolution in both style and scale. Determined to continue creating, he discovered the art of woodturning through a club in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, where he developed new skills making bowls and decorative turned pieces.
Recognising that many fairs already featured traditional woodturners, Dennis chose to follow a more individual path by specialising in handcrafted bandsaw boxes. Fascinated by the endless possibilities of shape, grain, and timber, he invested in a scroll bandsaw that allowed for more intricate cuts and flowing organic forms. The result is a distinctive collection of beautifully crafted boxes, each one unique in both design and character.
Made from a variety of carefully selected woods, these sculptural boxes are designed to be treasured as both practical objects and works of art. Ideal as thoughtful gifts for men, women, and children alike, they can be used to store jewellery, watches, pens, coins, keepsakes, and cherished collections. Some designs even incorporate hidden or secret drawers, adding an element of surprise and delight.
Combining decades of woodworking experience with a continual willingness to adapt and innovate, Dennis’ work celebrates the enduring beauty of many types of wood and accentuating their unique forms of shape and grain, and the quiet satisfaction of artisan craftsmanship, all his work is made exquisitely by hand with an exacting eye for the finest details.
