Enchanted Dwellings - Fairy Houses
Tucked away in her home workshop near Swaffham, Sarah Snodgrass has recently joined the Guild, bringing her magical craft – with her touch of whimsy and imagination to life through a growing collection of enchanting fairy houses.
Having began her craft journey only in January 2024, sparked by an idea that arrived, quite literally, in a dream, Sarah has been developing her craft and ideas ever since, and each piece has evolved into a small but intricate world of its own – playful, characterful, and full of unexpected detail. No two houses are ever the same, and part of Sarah’s joy lies in watching each creation take shape, never entirely certain how it will look until the final touches are complete.
Every fairy house is carefully handcrafted using a thoughtful mix of recycled and natural materials. What begins as a simple plastic container is transformed through a meticulous process that can take anywhere from 20 to 50 hours – while the more elaborate castle designs can exceed 100 hours of work. The structure is first shaped and reinforced, before windows and doors, crafted from reclaimed pallet wood, are added. Stonework is applied and grouted by hand, giving each piece a timeless, storybook feel.
Attention then turns to the finer details: doors formed from naturally occurring knot holes, and roofs constructed from an imaginative range of materials including slate, bark, pine cones, cedar cones, coir matting, and even copper coins. Once complete, each house is illuminated and mounted onto reclaimed slate bases, often generously supplied by SIG Roofing, before being engraved and decorated to enhance its unique character.
Designed primarily for outdoor display, many of the fairy houses feature solar-powered lighting, while smaller pieces may include indoor battery illumination. Though magical in appearance, they are intended as decorative artworks rather than toys, and care is advised around small children due to delicate components.
Spending as much time as possible immersed in this self-described “Fairyland,” Sarah continues to explore new ideas and techniques, delighting in the sense of surprise that comes with every finished piece. Each house offers a glimpse into a miniature world – inviting curiosity, storytelling, and a little everyday enchantment.
